There is no greater love than the love a mother feels for a child, I believe. February is the month of love and we think of our Valentines as lovers – romantic partners. I have two little Valentines in my house that epitomize unconditional love and fun love and pure, sweet love. So in this month of love I am so very grateful for a wonderful husband and two boys who make my heart sing.
I wanted to share an email I received that truly touched my heart… a group of researchers asked small children what love was and here is a selection of responses:
—When my grandma got arthritis, she couldn’t bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandpa does it for her now all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That’s love. Rebecca- age 8
—When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just know that your name is safe in their mouths. Billy- age 4
—Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving Cologne and they go out and smell each other. Kari- age 5
—Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs. Chrissy- age 6
—Love is what’s in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen. Bobby- age 7
—During my piano recital, I was on stage and I was scared. I looked at all the people watching me and saw my daddy waving and smiling. He was the only one doing that. I wasn’t scared anymore. That’s love. Cindy- age 8
Love is when mommy sees daddy on the toilet and doesn’t think it’s gross. Mark – age 6
Ask your own children “what is love” and share with us how they answer!
Happy Month of Love!

We so often thing of Valentine’s Day as a romantic occasion but really should be a celebration of LOVE with all people in our lives. I love the quotes… the french fries one made me laugh… and I really liked the one about Christmas.
I agree there is no greater love than the love a father feels toward his children. The unconditional love that you get back from them is pure. It’s always fun to read what children say or write at this time of year, in regards to what love is.
I love the quotes! We have always made our children a part of our Valentine’s Day – even now when they have their own “Valentines” to celebrate with. We should really try to celebrate the love – everyday of the year!
Out of the mouths of babes! Happy Valentine’s Day to all of the Mom’s out there, including mine!
I hope that when I grow old, I have a husband that will paint my toenails for me
Love means always having to say youre sorry………….
Love is telling your children you love them and they reply by saying, “love you more.”
I”m asking my son tonight … and also sending this to his 4th grade teacher so she can ask all of them.
I went to the store this weekend to buy my kids their Valetine’s presents. My daughter is 16 but I always buy her a little valentine stuffed animal. She has them all. That’s love.
Love is about not always being right. It is about feeling so strongly for another person that you can overlook their bad or sometimes annoying qualities and see them for who they are- and see them for the wonderful person they are. They do the same for you. No one is perfect so I’m thankful to have family and a partner who loves me for who I am, flaws and all.
This is so adorable! I think the quotes are great!
Here are some more from children and their thoughts on love that I found on the internet:
* “I’m in favor of love as long as it doesn’t happen when “The Simpsons” is on television.” (Anita, 6)
* “Love will find you, even if you are trying to hide from it. I have been trying to hide from it since I was five, but the girls keep finding me.” (Bobby,
* “I’m not rushing into being in love. I’m finding fourth grade hard enough.” (Regina, 10)

I love the one about the little girl and her piano recital.. that was totally my Dad when I was younger!! Every year for Valentine’s day when I was a kid, he would get my mom 12 roses, BUT always took one rose out and put it in a special vase for me!
Even though my children are grown, this inspires ME to go out and buy them a special Valentine this year:)
This makes me want to go to Atlanta and spend Valentines Day with my little “Ally”! (Granddaughter)Her “hugs” are the best!
Kids can make you feel more special than anything in the world. There’s not a week that goes by that my five year old doesn’t say something that will make me laugh. It’s amazing what can come out of their mouths!
Fabulous! I love February because we celebrate “love” with everyone that is important in our life. I really like what kids think and say! We can certainly learn a lot from kids!
So true. Kids are great and so honest. They say what you are thinking. I especially like the quote from the girl who was talking about her dad in the audience. I would hope my daughter would say “Love is…when my dad jumps up and down and screams like a nut (I mean a nut) when I hit my cheerleading stunt and do my tumble pass correctly.” I will not forget to celebrate this month of love with my entire family.
We don’t generally celebrate Valentines Day but my husband gives me flowers all the time so I guess you could say we celebrate the Month of Love every month. At least twice a month he brings me home a little something that says “you are special everyday”
I am inspired to send my awesome college age kids a sentimental Valentine. I loved this.
Another great quote to share during our celebration:
Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Others stay awhile, make footprints on our hearts and we are never, ever the same.
All of the kids’ responses were tremendous. My top two: Bobby-age 7 (incredibly mature) and Billy-age 4 (incredibly deep!!)
